April Devotional – Meditation on Ice!

1 April 2006

Scripture:

Don’t lose sight of my words. Let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they bring life and radiant health to those who discover their meaning.

Psalm 4:21-22 NLT

Gosh – it’s spring already and yet I wondered if spring would ever come with the prolonged periods of cold weather we’ve been experiencing. But the daffodils are a wonderful reminder of warmer times to come.

Easter is not only a busy time for nature, it’s also my busiest time of the year. I will shortly be leading a variety of workshops and concerts at Easter People (a conference where 1000’s of Christians gather together) as well as leading a Holy Week retreat. Sounds exhausting doesn’t it!!

I love leading sessions for the youth, though, because they always come up with such original titles like ‘Meditation on Ice’ my theme for this years youth celebration at Easter People. With some relief I discovered I did not need to wear my ice skates to lead the session, but this unusual title helped me to reflect on the similarities between skating and Christian Meditation. Well it’s true, Christian Meditation is the ultimate ‘chill out’ experience and stress-buster, but it’s also a form of prayer that deepens our relationship with God as well as our understanding of Scripture. And yes, it does take some practicing, but not as much as ice skating! The joy of meditating is that once you’ve learned a few basics – you begin to weave in and out of the crowds and simply glide along. And even if you fall over or bump into a barrier – it doesn’t matter, because meditation – like ice skating, remains a wonderfully exhilarating experience.

So why not put on your boots and try skating this Easter!!

Prayer:

Lord, help me to ‘step out onto the ice’ and to discover new ways of praying and deepening my relationship with you this Easter. Amen
