Preparing for Advent - The Lord's Prayer

Preparing for Advent - The Lord's Prayer

Wherever Jesus went during his short time on earth he caused controversy. That controversy lives on today with the banning of the the Lord's Prayer video from cinemas across the country in case it causes offence. The 60 second advert released by the Church of England encouraging people to pray, was to be shown before Star Wars:the Force Awakens due to be released on 18th December.

However, there's nothing like having something banned to make it of interest! The Lord's Prayer can become over familiar to us and lose its meaning, so fresh ways of approaching this prayer are very are helpful.

The 60 second video begins with the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, speaking the first line of the Lord's Prayer "Our Father in heaven..." The following lines are said by people from a diverse range of backgrounds including school children, refugees, traffic wardens, farmers, weight lifters, street pastors, a mourner at a graveside, a festival goer etc. The Lord's Prayer video reminds us to pray for people from different backgrounds, situations and jobs. You might like to pause the video at any point you find especially moving and pray in greater depth There's power in the unity of joining together with others in prayer during these challenging times.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.
