The Desert is Blooming!!
See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. Song of Songs 2:11-12 NIV
One thing I encourage people to do at the beginning of a new year is to ask God for a word. My word this year is Spring. It certainly didn't feel much like Spring the first few months of this year, but despite my circumstances I had an inner joy - a Spring in my spirit. My scripture during this time has been from Song of Songs 2:11-13, suggesting that the winter was over.
Having written about the desert in Transformed by the Holy Spirit and my new book Transformed by the Love of the Father (published soon) I longed to spend time there, especially during Lent. So I flew to Death Valley, California, the hottest driest most extreme place in North America.
California had been experiencing its worst drought ever recorded but suddenly, in October 2015, the storms came. Although rain caused considerable damage to the desert, it also resulted in the current Super Bloom - a once in a lifetime experience which I was privileged to just witness. The flowers were on overdrive popping their heads up everywhere through the rubble. I saw vast carpets of yellow flowers - Desert Gold, punctuated by a whole variety of multi-coloured wild flowers including the elegant Desert Five-spot. It was stunning. Jaw-droppingly beautiful. A wonderful illustration of a valley of death becoming a valley of life.
It's a shame I couldn't have taken you all with me to the desert, however, the next best thing is this inspiring 3 minute video on Death Valley's Super Bloom. You might also like to read my Bible study, including an imaginative desert meditation, in Transformed by the Holy Spirit - book & CD/MP3.
It's also not too late to pray and ask God for your word for this year.
