Licensed to Chill

Licensed to ChillSo what is Licensed to Chill?

Licensed to Chill is my new one-woman show and features a chilled out mix of performance poetry, prose and meditation gently stirred with a dash of humour. Oh … and there’s some audience participation too which folk enjoy. It’s quite a mix but people seem to love it.

Is it true you come on in the second half as James Bond?

Well yes – it is called Licensed to Chill! But I don’t have a gun, but a secret weapon of a more culinary nature. Enough said!

And what about the Vicar of Dibley?

Well it’s true I do have a poem about women vicars and when I first performed Licensed to Chill I had no idea that there were 3 women vicars in the audience – they must have been ‘under cover’. Fortunately they loved it and one of them has written an endorsement for my show.

Is it true that you’re a frustrated Chick-lit writer?

Yes, I’m afraid it is, but this show gives me chance to ‘out’ my Bridget Jones side and it’s wonderfully freeing!

Is it just for women?

Well I think women especially like the show as it gives them chance to let their hair down and switch off from some of the pressures in their life. But a male Minister did say to me that men needed to see my show too.

Is it just for Christians?

No, the show is suitable for anyone. In fact many non Christians like the fact that Christians can laugh at themselves and don’t take themselves too seriously.

What themes do you explore?

Well I explore our ‘fast’ culture, and how that is adding to our stress load. I explore the effect the media is having on our lives and beliefs. The pressure for women to be perfect at everything – size zero and multi tasking hero, at the same time. Some of my poetry is taken from my ‘Heart’ series of gift books and The Thing about Stress and Calories, and some of my more comic verse has been written especially for the show. I also incorporate some breathing exercises to help people de-stress.

Where are you performing it?

Anywhere people will have me! The more inventive the venue the better. I’ve just performed Licensed to Chill in a restaurant in Cornwall for Hope 08, a small professional theatre in Oxfordshire for Activate, and a coffee club in Hope Valley, Derbyshire – where I was given the most amazing homemade cakes!
